A Clarion Call For Protectionism
For the last 30 years, we have heard the corporate news media bombard us with the corporate "line" that "protectionism will hurt" America. And why does the news media insist on calling those tax dodging international corporations, "American corporations"? For the last thirty plus years, the media has convinced us that we would be isolationists if we had fair policies governing our trade with other countries. They have insisted that it would hurt us if we instituted fair trade practices in the interests of this country. Other countries do and it has worked out very well for those countries. But in those years we have seen the manufacturing sector of this country decimated by so-called "free trade"policies. The ONLY country free trade hasn't worked out for is the country that hasn't instituted tariffs on foreign goods coming into that nation; the United States of America! And even as our well paying jobs have been shipped overseas, we have still continued to believe them. During the GW Bush administration, when republicans had control of both houses of congress, they pulled "the wool over our eyes". The congress passed into law what they called the "American Jobs Re-investment Law". It sounds good, right?! But what it really did was allow corporations to receive tax breaks for the express purpose of investing in building manufacturing plants in foreign countries and shipping American manufacturing jobs overseas. Then they hid their profits in tax havens in the Cayman Islands, Switzerland and other places. Now they're merging with corporations of other countries in order to avoid paying taxes in America. And on top of that, they try to coerce the US congress into giving them tax breaks if they want those corporations to repatriate that money back into the US. These corporations don't give a damn about America!
But the news media wants us to believe they are somehow "patriotic"! It's time to treat them the same way they treat America. Time to take back ALL tax breaks AND impose tariffs on ALL goods coming into this country from foreign countries. I do believe corporations refer to this as protectionism. IT'S WAY PAST TIME FOR AMERICA TO BECOME PROTECTIONIST.
